Ectopic pregnancy: symptoms, diagnosis and follow-up
Seek prompt assessment for pain or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. One blood test cannot show where a pregnancy is located.
Do not wait with emergency symptoms
Sudden severe abdominal pain, marked dizziness, fainting or pallor when pregnancy is possible may indicate internal bleeding. Call 112 immediately in Türkiye; do not wait for an appointment or another test result.

What is an ectopic pregnancy?
The pregnancy develops outside the uterine cavity, most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot continue normally in this location and may put the person’s health at risk. The clinical team will explain assessment and follow-up after diagnosis.
Signs needing prompt assessment
- One-sided lower abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding or shoulder-tip pain when pregnancy is possible.
- A pregnancy test not yet being positive is not a reason to wait. Other conditions can cause these symptoms too; assessment is needed.
Examination, ultrasound and blood tests
Ultrasound and monitoring of beta-hCG (a pregnancy hormone) may be needed to locate the pregnancy. The first assessment may be inconclusive and the team may repeat tests. Do not diagnose yourself from one value or an online threshold.
Treatment, follow-up and emotional support
Depending on the findings, care may involve monitored follow-up, medicine or surgery. Monitoring is not waiting at home without supervision; scheduled reviews matter. Pregnancy loss can be difficult. Ask for support and discuss future pregnancy plans in light of recovery and the treatment used.
