Diabetes and fasting: assess personal risk first
Fasting decisions are not based only on diabetes type or tablet use. Plan medicines, monitoring and when to stop fasting beforehand.

There is no single answer for everyone
Going without food and fluids can increase low or high blood glucose and dehydration risks. Tablets alone do not make fasting safe; some tablets also cause hypoglycaemia. Previous severe lows, kidney or heart problems and current control matter in assessment.
Plan before Ramadan
- Share glucose records, medicines and previous fasting experiences.
- Change medicine doses and timing only with your team’s plan; do not stop insulin yourself.
- Get written monitoring times, a contact number and thresholds for stopping the fast.
Do not postpone monitoring
Feeling well does not prove glucose is safe. Continue planned checks; check promptly for shaking, sweating or dizziness. Do not wait for sunset with a low reading or hypo symptoms; if able to swallow safely, take fast-acting sugar and follow your personal hypo plan.
Food choices and reassessment
For people assessed as suitable, the pre-dawn meal, balanced portions and a personal fluid plan during permitted hours matter. Avoid turning the evening meal into a very large, sugary meal. Illness or worsening control calls for reassessment, not reliance on an earlier agreement.
Do not continue fasting in an emergency
High glucose with vomiting, abdominal pain or rapid, deep breathing needs urgent assessment. Call 112 for unconsciousness, seizure or severe confusion; give no food or drink by mouth to someone unable to swallow safely. This page is not personal clearance to fast or a medicine-dose recommendation.
