Menopause: symptoms, options and follow-up
Changing periods and hot flushes can affect daily life. Plan support that suits you; do not dismiss bleeding after menopause as normal.

The transition and menopause are different
Perimenopause is the transition when periods and symptoms can change. Without hormonal contraception or another cause, 12 months without a period suggests menopause. Hormonal medicines can complicate assessment; not every absent period means menopause.
Symptoms vary between people
Hot flushes, sleep difficulty, mood changes or vaginal dryness may occur, but experiences differ. Seek support for symptoms affecting your life. Periods stopping before age 45 warrant assessment; not everyone needs the same hormone-test panel for diagnosis.
Preparing for your consultation
- Record your last period, bleeding pattern and symptoms affecting daily life.
- Share medicines, contraception and herbal products you use.
- Discuss any cancer, blood-clot or surgery history and your treatment priorities.
Support is planned individually
Hormonal and non-hormonal options and psychological support can be discussed according to symptoms and medical history. Hormone replacement therapy is not contraception; discuss pregnancy prevention separately. “Natural” products are not automatically safe; do not start hormones or supplements on your own because interactions can occur.
When should bleeding be assessed?
Even a single small episode of pink or brown spotting after menopause needs assessment. It does not always mean cancer, but should not be assumed normal without checking the cause. Call 112 for emergency help if heavy bleeding causes fainting or severe weakness.
