Water birth: options, suitability and safety
Using water during labour and giving birth in water are separate decisions. Discuss suitability, monitoring and an alternative plan with your team.

What does using water mean?
Warm water may help some people cope with contractions and move comfortably. Spending labour in a pool does not require giving birth there. Water birth is also vaginal birth; vaginal birth outside water is not restricted to a bed.
Suitability is reassessed
This option can be discussed for uncomplicated pregnancies at term. Gestation, the baby’s position, maternal and fetal health and monitoring needs affect suitability. Circumstances can change during labour and the team may advise leaving the pool for safety. This does not mean you have failed.
Questions for your birth plan
- Current service availability, pool access and trained staff.
- Maternal and baby monitoring, hygiene and safe exit arrangements.
- Pain-relief options, what happens if plans change and cost coverage.
Discuss benefits and risks together
Water may aid comfort, but does not guarantee a painless or risk-free birth. Studies associate it with some favourable outcomes, not certain results for every individual. Discuss rare risks such as cord snapping and uncertainty about some infant outcomes. An old website entry alone does not confirm current availability at Nev.
Do not let a birth plan delay urgent assessment
Contact your maternity team promptly for reduced movements, bleeding, waters breaking or possible preterm labour; do not wait for a pool appointment. Call 112 for heavy bleeding, fainting or severe breathlessness. This is not guidance for unassisted home water birth.
