Water birth: options, suitability and safety

Warm water may help some people cope with contractions and move comfortably. Spending labour in a pool does not require giving birth there. Water birth is also vaginal birth; vaginal birth outside water is not restricted to a bed.

This option can be discussed for uncomplicated pregnancies at term. Gestation, the baby’s position, maternal and fetal health and monitoring needs affect suitability. Circumstances can change during labour and the team may advise leaving the pool for safety. This does not mean you have failed.

Water may aid comfort, but does not guarantee a painless or risk-free birth. Studies associate it with some favourable outcomes, not certain results for every individual.
