Preparing for tests
No single preparation rule applies to every test. Ask for instructions for your own procedure.

First, confirm which test is planned
- Check the test name, date and department. Ask the relevant care team whether preparation is needed.
- Not every blood test requires fasting. If fasting is requested, ask how long, whether you may drink water and when your instructions begin.
Medicines and your daily routine
- Tell the healthcare team about prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins and supplements. Do not stop medicines or change doses unless your doctor tells you to.
- If you receive instructions about food, exercise or sample collection, make sure you understand them before following them.
If you could not complete preparation
- Tell the team before the procedure if you could not follow an instruction or forgot part of it. The team should decide whether the test can proceed.
- This list does not replace your individual test instructions. Ask the relevant department separately about preparation for imaging or invasive procedures.
